Rookie Kirk McCarty pitched four scoreless relief innings, silencing a Boston crowd of more than 30,000 for his first big league win, and helped the Guardians snap a three-game losing skid.
CLEVELAND, Ohio — Guardians rookies Nolan Jones and Kirk McCarty made the difference Tuesday in the field, at the plate and on the mound to help Cleveland snap a three-game losing skid.
McCarty, a left-hander making his fourth major league appearance, picked up the momentum produced by Jones’ defense and carried it over four scoreless relief innings, silencing a Boston crowd of more than 30,000 for his first big league win.Jones’ throw was the 27th assist by a Guardians outfielder, which leads all of baseball. His home run off Boston starter Josh Winckowski was the second of his young career and gave Cleveland a comfortable lead in a park where no lead ever really feels safe.
Shaw’s outing marked the most games pitched in major league history prior to a player making his first start, but he exited after the first three batters reached base in the third and Xander Bogaerts cut Cleveland’s lead to 5-1 with an RBI single. Jones’ throw to the plate beat Bogaerts’ head-first slide as Austin Hedges applied the tag. Boston challenged the out call, but Marty Foster’s out call was allowed to stand upon replay review.
