A shuttered Noblesville community garden that fed the needy hundreds of pounds of free fresh food each year has new life.
The city and a non-profit have reached a three-year agreement to revive the garden at Third and Pleasant streets. Last May, the city dismantled the garden, on city-owned land, because officials said it had been neglected and posed a nuisance.
The caretakers of the six plots disputed that assessment but its lease had run out with the city and talks to renew it had stalled. The Noblesville Community Garden Inc., will manage the garden and be responsible for all planting and paying the water bills. Jason Hand, a member of the organization, said relations with the city have been repaired “and both communication and a desire to collaborate seem to be improved.”“We have a couple of other volunteer leaders from the community on board to try to do something new, different, and better," he said in an email.
The garden provided free tomatoes, green beans, zucchini, onions and lettuce to neighborhood families and honeybees were kept there.“The plots provide families who live in apartments and don’t have space for a garden a chance to grow for themselves,” Wilhoite said. About 40% of the garden will be for the community at large and the pollinator section will be expanded, she said.
The Noblesville Public Works and Safety Committee approved the contract last week. The organization will pay $565 a year for insurance and $520 for five months of water use.
