over 10,000 meters in June, his times didn’t have sponsors lining up to sign him to a professional contract. He majored in chemical engineering, but following a career in that so soon after graduating would have felt like a betrayal of his talent.

“It’s just a couple of guys, it’s not an established group,” McMillan said. “We don’t have a title sponsor and we don’t really call ourselves anything.” When he swung on to First Avenue, the crowds lining the course gave him a lift, and McMillan ran his fastest mile split of 4:53. He moved up nine places in the second half, the opposite of what he had experienced in Chicago.

He reeled off a couple of five-minute miles to bring him into the finishing straight in Central Park, where he crossed the line delighted in 10th place.
