The developer is seeking to release up to 1 million gallons of treated wastewater per day into Helotes Creek.
The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality on Tuesday held a public hearing about plans for a wastewater treatment plant to serve the proposed Guajolote Ranch development. The developer proposes to release up to 1 million gallons of treated wastewater per day into the creek.
The San Antonio Water System – the city-owned utility that will provide water for Guajolote Ranch – has signed off on Lennar building a wastewater treatment plant for the development. Municipal Operations LLC, the company hired by Lennar to operate the proposed wastewater plant, submitted its application in May 2022. However, the plant permit also requires approval from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, the state’s top environmental regulatory agency.
Based on their analysis and field research, TCEQ staffers said they believe the treated wastewater from the Guajolote Ranch plant would be clean enough to swim in and would not pose any risk to wildlife or the community. Preliminary reviews of the proposed area, streams and discharge found that the existing water quality uses would not be impaired, TCEQ staffers said.
A number of TCEQ staffers were in attendance, including Joy Thurston-Cook, the water section manager for the San Antonio regional office. Employees from Municipal Operations were also in attendance.
