Somehow Matt Schobel has proven he’s a master of the quick fix while simultaneously adhering to the axiom that success is a process.
When Schobel took over the Columbus program four years ago, he inherited a team which had produced one winning season in the previous five campaigns.In his debut year , Schobel led Columbus to a 12-3 record and a state semifinal berth which resulted in a 42-21 loss to eventual state champion Grandview.
The Cardinals’ 44-10 record in four years is a stark contrast to the 20-33 record Columbus compiled in the previous five seasons. “It’s a special group where the kids get along great, and the chemistry is great with the coaches, and the kids come to work every day," he added."That’s what every coach says about his team, but it’s particularly true about this group.”
“Against Lorena…that was a lot to run into in the first round. They really got after us last year, so it was a big challenge and a close game.”Schobel, who played tight end in the NFL for Cincinnati and Philadelphia, is part of a Columbus football legacy.Four Schobels dot this year’s Columbus roster, one of which is sophomore quarterback Adam, who is Matt’s son.
