At least nine people were killed in Peru Monday during clashes between law enforcement authorities and anti-government protesters who were attempting to invade an airport in the southeastern city of Juliaca, the local ombudsman’s office said.

A riot police line faces demonstrators blocking the Pan-American highway demanding the resignation of the President of Peru, Dina Boluarte at La Joya, Arequipa Region in southern Peru, on January 6, 2023.

Morales, who was his country’s first indigenous president, expressed his support for the protests against President Dina Boluarte, especially in the ethnic Aymara Puno region which borders Bolivia and is the epicenter of the demonstrations.
