Postdocs in U.S. biomedical research labs should be paid better, even if it means supporting fewer of them. That’s the preliminary position of a working group formed by the U.S. National Institutes of Health to address growing concerns that postdoctoral appointments are no longer an attractive option for early-career researchers., the group laid out “guiding principles” that include boosting postdoc pay, pushing for benefits, and capping the length of postdocs.
. “There was really a problem brewing and gathering and accelerating,” working group co-chair Shelley Berger—an epigenetics professor at the University of Pennsylvania—toldInsider in an interview shortly after NIH’s Advisory Committee to the Director assembled the group. At four public listening sessions earlier this year with attendees from more than 350 institutions, the working group heard a range of ideas, including supplemental funding for parents, better oversight of postdoc mentors, and a shift to hiring more staff scientists in academia. “The passion of the community was very clear,” Schwetz said. “There is a real desire for change.”
