Alabama football coach Nick Saban insists he didn’t mean Texas A&M did anything wrong when he said the Aggies “bought” their entire 2022 recruiting class.DESTIN, Fla. — Texas A&M coach Jimbo Fisher and Alabama coach Nick Saban shared a conference room by the beach Tuesday and unloaded a few things off their respective chests, with 12 other SEC coaches a captive audience.
Saban was talking to a large group of business leaders in Birmingham, Ala., about the Aggies’ top-rated recruiting class of 2022 and AL.com captured his hottest of takes on video. He was asked Tuesday in the more intimate setting of the spring meetings what “evidence” he had that A&M bought its entire class — one that even included a kicker.
“I didn’t say anybody did anything wrong,” Saban continued, “and I’ve said everything I’m going to say about this. … some kind of uniform name, image and likeness standard that supports some kind of equitable national competition I think is really important in college athletics and college football.”
Saban, who didn’t appear as cocksure of himself as usual, ducked and dodged a few arrows early Tuesday during a visit with reporters, then pressed on with what he said was his real issue: trying to make things fair across the board on the NIL front.
