The National Irrigation Administration will need at least a P200 billion budget annually for its irrigation projects to ensure food security in the country.
NIA Administrator Eddie Guillen further said that the P200-billion budget would fund “short to long-term projects of the agency such as the construction of high dams, restoration projects, solar pump irrigation initiatives, and water impounding projects.” The NIA chief, quoted by GMA News, disclosed that the agency already proposed P200 billion to the Department of Budget and Management for next year’s budget. The official nevertheless expressed confidence that Congress will help the agency receive a bigger allocation once the budget deliberations for the P6.352-trillion proposed national expenditure plan begin.
