NHL players have previously used Pride tape to show support for members of the LGBTQ+ community.

The NHL has reversed course on its decision to ban players from displaying support for social causes through the tape on their sticks. The controversy around the ban centered primarily around Pride-themed tape, a rainbow-colored stick tape that players have used for Pride nights in the NHL.

Before the season, the NHL sent a memo to teams detailing what they can and cannot do for the various theme nights, which are generally used to spotlight causes and issues, including support of the LGBTQ+ community, military appreciation or the annual Hockey Fights Cancer campaign.

Burke later said that he would pay the fine for any player who chose to defy the league’s ban and use Pride tape. Arizona Coyotes defenseman Travis Dermott became the first player to do so when he used it in a game Saturday. Dermott has previously used Pride tape throughout the season, not just on his team’s Pride night, to make clear his support for the LGBTQ+ community.
