Gov. Gavin Newsom has announced he is appointing Laphonza Butler to fill the Senate seat left vacant by Dianne Feinstein's death. Butler is one of the leaders of the abortion lobby, and as such she is one of the leading Democratic fundraisers. But EMILY's List isn’t merely a fundraising juggernaut. The group is basically a gatekeeper for the Democratic Party. “For Democratic women,” the New York Times reported a few years back, “no endorsement is as sought after or powerful as one conferred by Emily’s List, which functions as the political equivalent of the old-fashioned ‘Good Housekeeping’ seal of approval for voters and potential donors.
