Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) and other California officials are bracing themselves and their state for a second Trump term.
Knowing the state’s liberal policies would be a target for the former president, Newsom is “Trump-proofing” his state,
“We know the playbook,” Newsom said at the recent signing of a climate change agreement with Sweden. “We’re definitely trying to future-proof California in every way, shape, or form.”a California Clean Air Act waiver that allowed the state to set its own tailpipe emissions standards. Some automakers sided with Trump, but California made deals with BMW, Ford, Honda, Volkswagen, and Volvo to adhere to California’s standards, which are stricter than federally required.
Last week, California made a deal with Stellantis, the fourth-largest automaker in the world, which includes brands such as Chrysler, Jeep, and Dodge, on the basis of the 2019 deal. “It’s significant and cannot be under, the importance of their voluntary compliance,” Newsom said. “This agreement is a big deal in accelerating and advancing our efforts.”
