The foundation says the board will provide “independent and diverse perspectives.”

... [+]The Gates Foundation, perhaps the largest private charitable foundation in the country, is shaking up its leadership following Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates’s earth-shattering divorce last year.

The foundation Wednesday appointed four new members to its board of trustees: telecom billionaire Strive Masiyiwa of Zimbabwe; Minouche Shafik, director of the London School of Economics; Tom Tierny, cofounder of nonprofit advisory firm Bridgespan; and Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman. The appointments come after the foundation was thrown into turmoil last year when Bill and Melinda announced their divorce and Warren Buffett stepped down from his role as trustee.

In a statement, the foundation said the additional trustees are an explicit acknowledgement from Bill and Melinda “that the foundation will be well served by the addition of independent voices” in the wake of their divorce. Three additional people may be appointed in the future for a total of nine board members. Each trustee will serve three-year terms with a two-consecutive-term limit.

“As we look ahead, I’m excited to welcome our new board members. Their wide-ranging experience and expertise will have enormous impact on our ability to tackle the complexity of these challenges and bring us closer to realizing a world where everyone has the chance to lead a healthy and productive life,” Gates said in a statement.

Three of the four new board members have extensive ties to the philanthropy world. Suzman has worked at the Gates Foundation since 2007 and has served as CEO since 2020. , sat on the board of the Rockefeller Foundation for 15 years. He and his wife, Tsitsi, founded the Higherlife Foundation, which supports orphaned and poor children in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Burundi and Lesotho. His fortune mostly comes from EcoNet Wireless, the Zimbabwe telecom firm he founded in 1998.
