New York Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton has had a strong offseason. Signing his restricted free agents, including Jacob Trouba, could be his biggest challenge of the summer.

After inking top unrestricted free agent Artemi Panarin to a seven-year contract with a cap hit of just over $11.6 million per season on July 1, the Rangers have just over $8 million in cap space still to work with, according to. They’ll need most of that just to sign Trouba, the defenseman who was acquired from the Winnipeg Jets on June 17.
The following season, his numbers slipped to 24 points and 21:54 in 55 games played as he struggled with injuries. He remained second in average ice time and was a key defensive presence as the Jets went on a long playoff run for the first time in the history of the Jets/Atlanta Thrashers franchise. Trouba followed up with his best season to date, hitting the 50-point mark for the first time in his career. But after the Jets’ first-round playoff elimination at the hands of the St. Louis Blues, Cheveldayoff needed to make some tough decisions about how to allocate his limited cap space.
If the Trouba ticket does end up over $7 million, Gorton will need to do more maneuvering in order to remain cap compliant, even though his other free agents aren't expected to command big bucks.
