Daniel Jones's injury-shortened season was marred by poor offensive line play. For this analysis, we chose to look at his best performance of 2023, the Week 2 game against Arizona.
The Daniel Jones debate will likely never end, as Jones’s presence on the roster continues to split the New York Giants fan base.
His season looked like a complete failure statistically, but many factors led to his overall poor performance. Still, there were rays of light in Jones' game, specifically the Arizona Cardinals game in Week 2. He finished that game 26 of 37 for 321 yards, two passing touchdowns, and an interception that ricocheted off the hands of Saquon Barkley.
The Good: Daniel Jones' athleticism and ability to run continues to be the most underrated part of his game. The first aspect is that as a rusher, he operates well with quarterback run reads on plays and forces the defense to play 11-on-11. In this Arizona game, he scored a rushing touchdown on a read play that caught the defense completely off guard.
In the short-to-intermediate passing game, success is predicated on the quarterback’s ability to minimize receiver peril and increase their opportunity to run after the catch. The Ugly: There are a few things not to like about Jones. One reason is how frazzled he gets on his second and third reads but the most frustrating thing is his unwillingness to push the ball deep more. The problem is the deep passes that are not completed or even attempted. Jones seems to have two issues with the deep pass. The first is his unwillingness to take the shot.
