Are you one of those 'it's almost a shame to eat something so pretty' types? Or are you more of a 'that looks amazing and I can't wait to eat it' sort of person?
Whimsical desserts and beverages are drawing crowds to Gong Gan, a recently opened Korean cafe in Flushing, Queens. On my camera roll, there are more photos of my cats than anyone could possibly need, nearly as many images of others’ cats sunbathing in windows and strolling down sidewalks, and a decent showing of dishes I’ve been served at restaurants in recent months.
Curved architecture in creamy tones and floor-to-ceiling windows create a bright, airy environment punctuated by vibrant floral arrangements from another planet. On a mirrored podium, the pastel pink petals of an ethereal tree are held up by a trunk of delicate strands of baby blue blossoms. The window display is a cross between a palm plant’s attempt to outdo a proud peacock’s feathers and a psychedelic journey to the depths of the ocean.
At Gong Gan, a portion of the menu consists of Korean pastries that have already been popularized elsewhere in New York City. Certainly no one is complaining, though, that there's a new place to get croffles not far from Croffle House, the Flushing shop credited with first bringing the croissant-waffle mashup to Queens.
