Chapman, a 35-year-old seven-time All-Star, had a 2.45 ERA in 29.1 innings pitched for the Royals. He’s struck out 53 of the 122 batters he’s faced this year for a 43% strikeout percentage, the second-highest among qualified relief pitchers in baseball. His four-seam fastball is as fast as its been since 2017.“Everything went great in Kansas City,” Chapman said. “I’ve had a pretty good year, [I’m] thankful for it.
Bochy said Saturday that the plan is to use Chapman in a similar fashion to how the Royals did. One of baseball’s premier closers from 2012-21, Chapman pitched in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings with Kansas City. He’s recorded just two saves this season, but has eight holds in something closer to a versatile setup role.
Chapman has limited right-handed hitters to a .146 batting average this season, and can serve as a later-inning counter to right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz, who’s held lefties to a .158 batting average and struck out nearly half that he’s faced.Will Smith will still serve as the Rangers’ primary closer, per Bochy, though Chapman will be available in that role to spell Smith if he needs a day off.“Looking forward to having him,” Bochy said. “He just made us a better team, a better bullpen.
