A new California law will impose stiffer penalties on those who fail to show up to a reserved campground at one of the state's public parks or beaches.

A new California law will impose stiffer penalties on those who fail to show up to a reserved campground at one of the state’s hundreds of public parks and beaches. The bill’s author says the change will create a more equitable system for campground reservations as more residents plan trips outdoors. Gov. Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 618 over the weekend during a historic bill-signing blitz.

Bauer-Kahan’s bill instructs ReserveCalifornia to increase the financial penalties for a late cancellations. For a cancellation within two to six calendar days before the reservation start date, the reservation-maker will be out the cost of one night as well as any reservation fees. Those who cancel within 24 hours or don’t show up at all will forfeit the cost of their entire reservation and fees, which can run in the hundreds of dollars depending on the location and duration of stay.
