Directed by Alejandra Márquez Abella, the new Prime film, “A Million Miles Away, stars Actor Michael Peña. The migrant story is about a Mexican immigrant who ends up being a NASA astronaut.
That’s the thrust of the new film,The movie follows NASA flight engineer José Hernández’s improbable decades-long journey from a rural Mexican village to the fields of the San Joaquin Valley and eventually more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station.
We recently caught up with Márquez Abella to discuss the importance of this migrant tale, representation in general and crying tíos.I knew about José because it was a big thing when he went to space 15 years ago, but I didn’t know much detail. When I received the project from the producers, I was super emotional and motivated. That was the thing for me.I wanted to honor the people who pick the food that everyone is going to have on their tables.
This type of film is tricky in that you have these emotional moments you want to hit without coming across as overly sentimental. How did you navigate those pitfalls?
