Josh Harris’s group closed its $6.05 billion deal, the record sale price for an NFL franchise, to purchase the Commanders, formally marking the franchise’s first ownership change since Daniel Snyder bought the team from the Jack Kent Cooke estate in 1999.
Harris said he expects “excellence, dignity, respect and inclusivity” to define the organization’s culture moving forward.“A lot of stuff happened that was unfortunate,” Harris said. “We’re focused on changing the culture. I think a lot of that has hopefully been done. I mean, that’s what we think. But we’ve got to get in there. And obviously it’s about creating a management team where everyone doesn’t look the same. And it’s about zero tolerance on ethically challenged behaviors.
Harris did not rule out consideration of a change to the team name in the future but said the issue is not among the new owners’ immediate priorities. He declined to characterize his view of the current team name. Gibbs said the meeting impressed him, adding that the team has “a Washington group” that understands the history and culture of the franchise. But when he was asked what is needed to truly reunite the fan base, Gibbs’s answer was simple, the one he knows well from personal experience: winning.“This group really cares about this town, this organization,” Gibbs said, “and I think they’re going to go after it. They know it’s going to be all about winning.
