Kyrie Irving’s turbulent four-year tenure in Brooklyn ended Sunday, when the Nets agreed to trade the disgruntled all-star guard to the Dallas Mavericks for a package of players and draft picks.
“I think you have a responsibility as a basketball player, like I do as a coach,” Brooklyn’s Jacque Vaughn said Saturday. “I show up. I do my job every single day. That’s what I signed up for.”While Irving is eligible to sign a two-year, $83 million extension with the Mavericks before June 30, the initial expectation is that the sides will wait until the summer to broach the subject of his next contract.
Doncic signed a five-year, $207 million extension in 2021, but concerns over his relatively weak supporting cast in the wake of Brunson’s departure have prompted speculation that he might consider his alternatives if Dallas can’t hold its spot in the West’s top tier. According to multiple reports, the Mavericks consulted Doncic before consummating the Irving trade.To secure a long-lasting spot next to Doncic, Irving must rekindle his reputation as a big-game performer in the playoffs.
Though Brooklyn didn’t land a star in return for Irving, Finney-Smith and Dinwiddie are logical veteran additions to Durant’s supporting cast. Finney-Smith, 29, is a long and athletic wing defender, while Dinwiddie, 29, is a complementary scorer and playmaker who will help fill the backcourt hole created by Irving’s departure. Dinwiddie spent five seasons in Brooklyn from 2016 to 2021.
