Netflix's live-action One Piece TV show will bring Eiichiro Oda's manga to life, but must radically alter two major character arcs in order to work.
Two One Piece characters will need radically different stories in the live-action Netflix TV show. From visually depicting Monkey D. Luffy's rubber body to adapting a story that consists of over 1000 chapters when most Netflix projects get canceled after one or two seasons, live-action One Piece faces many obstacles. Adjusting the concept while maintaining faithfulness to Eiichiro Oda's legendary manga will be the biggest challenge One Piece must navigate after sailing onto Netflix.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY Currently filming ahead of a 2023 premiere, many of One Piece's core characters are already in place. The first five Straw Hat pirates have all been cast, while early villains such as Buggy and Alvida are also confirmed. The Netflix One Piece TV show has also announced key supporting figures including Peter Gadiot as Shanks and Morgan Davies as Koby.
Netflix's live-action One Piece does have characters that can be dropped after season 1. The likes of Buggy, Zeff and Kaya are all largely limited to One Piece season 1. Other characters that are not fundamental to Luffy's story - Dracule Mihawk, for instance - feasibly could flit in and out of Netflix's One Piece. Shanks and Koby are exceptions. Shanks will inevitably be a massive presence in Luffy's backstory, but cannot then disappear until One Piece season 4 or 5.
How One Piece Can Change Shanks & Koby's Stories For Live-Action Part of Shanks' appeal derives from his mystique, which means Netflix's One Piece TV show cannot show too much of the present-day Red Hair Pirates. One solution would be for One Piece to include more young Luffy flashbacks than Eiichiro Oda's early manga chapters did. Not only would this keep Shanks in the narrative, it would deepen their mentor-student relationship.
Koby's future heading into Netflix's One Piece seasons 2 and 3 is actually easier to plot out. In a series of manga one-shot cover page panels under the title "Diary of Koby-Meppo," Oda showed the aspiring Marine's harsh training, and how he eventually came under the wing of Luffy's grandfather, Garp. After Luffy and Koby go their separate ways, Netflix's One Piece could adapt this mini-arc in more detail as a B-plot.
