NCS softball playoffs first round finishes with several near-upsets as quarterfinals are set

Gabriella Tavares shut down one of the hottest teams in the Bay Area on Wednesday afternoon, allowing just two hits and striking out nine Amador Valley batters in a North Coast Section Division I upset.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when an Ava Thomas double drove in Jaidyn Torres. Katrina Longoria added an emphatic insurance run in the top of the seventh by hitting a solo home run over the right field wall. Amador Valley pitcher Kaylee Davis was otherwise superb, allowing just two hits and striking out seven in a pitcher’s duel.“None of them have been in this position before, they don’t know what it means to play in NCS or league playoffs, which makes these wins even more special,” Manley said. “We’re taking it one game at a time and focusing on playing our best softball.”The defending Division I champions narrowly avoided a first-round exit against James Logan.

James Logan’s cleanup hitter Shannon Garcia hit two doubles and had two RBIs, and senior Alina Perez had two hits and two RBIs too. Catcher Makayla Villapando was 2 for 4 for James Logan .No. 1 San Ramon Valley 9, No. 16 San Leandro 0
