Piedmont girls roll through Division IV after being ineligible for NCS Open. Will CIF put the Highlanders in the NorCal Open? Salesian boys beat Granada at the buzzer.
Girls: Defense leads Monte Vista to another NCS title
There was no letup in the third quarter, either. By the time that period ended, Monte Vista led 47-19.“Basically our defense was much tighter in this game,” coach Steve Cornell said after his team claimed back-to-back Division I titles. “I give my hat off to Granada. They’re a good team. But our defense had a little bit more speed than the last time we faced them.”
Piedmont did what an elite team does against competition that’s not at its level: it dominated. The top-seeded Highlanders wrapped up their first Division IV championship since 2006 by throttling Branson 75-59 on Saturday. “I’ve heard some of the talk about where we might be placed in NorCals,” coach Bryan Gardere told the Bay Area News Group via text. “Honestly, I don’t know. Last year we played D2 in CIFs. I would think D1 or Open .”Salesian and Granada, which lost heartbreaking semifinal games Wednesday, played for third place in the NCS Open Division on Saturday night at Contra Costa College.
Branson was not the first good team to light up the Spartans. Dublin scored 97, Oakland scored 73 and Salesian scored 77 and 67 points in wins over Pinole Valley.
