The departure of former Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly and the arrival of Marcus Freeman has helped bring Montana back in the fold, according to The Athletic’s Pete Samson. “The Kelly relationship basically soured him on Notre Dame. He couldn’t remember the last Notre Dame game he attended. But he did develop a relationship with Freeman in the past year,”Montana helped the 49ers win Super Bowls in 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1990, but never got the chance to bring the organization a fifth one after that.
He helped San Francisco post a 14-2 record during the regular season in 1990 and they reached the NFC Championship game before falling to the New York Giants. An elbow injury cost Montana the 1991 season and most of the 1992 campaign. Steve Young eventually eclipsed Montana and in 1993, the latter was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs.
