The Phoenix Suns entered the NBA playoffs with the best record in the NBA twice before. And twice before, they were topped by dynasties of those eras.
That’s a question longtime Phoenix Suns fans might be asking themselves as the team works its way through the first-round of the NBA playoffs, boasting the best regular-season record in the NBA and tops in Suns history, along with the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.
This season, the Suns broke the franchise record for wins, finishing 64-18. That eclipsed the 62-win mark set by the 1992-93 team and matched by the 2004-05 team .Both of those earlier teams also finished with the best record in the NBA and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs, but their runs to bring Phoenix its first NBA championship were thwarted by two teams that, at the time, were dynasties of the eras.
The Bulls won in six, and, as it turned out, their championship over Phoenix was the third of what would be six during the Jordan era of the 1990s.The 2004-05 Suns ran into a similar problem. They made their way to the Western Conference finals, only to lose to the San Antonio Spurs, which was building a dynasty under Greg Popovich, with Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. The Spurs won league titles in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007 .
Right now only one team checks all the boxes needed to be in the dynasty conversation: the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors appeared in five consecutive NBA Finals from 2015-19, winning three . This season, the Warriors finished 53-29 as the No. 3 seed in the West, even though Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Steph Curry all missed extended time with injuries. Now they are back, along with some noteworthy additions such as Jordan Poole and the return of André Iguodala .
