The agency finalized a rule to ban the use of bait like bacon grease, doughnuts, or pancake syrup, to hunt bears in national preserves across Alaska.
said it finalized regulations to ban the use of baiting bears with food like decadent pastries or bacon grease before killing the animals in national preserves across Alaska .for sport hunting and trapping within the state's national preserves . The change, which is consistent with the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act , only impacts sport hunting and will go into effect within 30 days.
NPS said said bear baiting presents multiples public safety concerns because it encourages bears to become conditioned to human-provided food. It also increases the likelihood of negative human-bear interactions.
