Success in getting students from high school into universities here — particularly UTSA by way of the Alamo Colleges — got a spotlight yesterday at the National Conference on Education, which is being held in San Antonio this year.

Their organizations have been working for years to increase the number of college freshmen in San Antonio and ultimately their graduation rates. On a panel before an audience of school superintendents and other administrators, they shared what they have done to improve their partnerships andThe conversation was moderated by Rick Torres, the CEO of National Student Clearinghouse, a research nonprofit. The conference is an annual showcase of the American Association of School Administrators.
“We actually compete with poverty,” he said. “Our prospective students each and every day weigh the opportunity costs of whether they can afford tuition, but whether actually they can afford to work less hours. Can they afford to give, largely their mother, less of their paycheck that their family and household is dependent on?”
His school district strives to make the impossible a reality for students who look like him, he said, noting that he is still learning English. The district’s motto, “Always Learning,” is also the name of a five-year plan the district is preparing to take to the SAISD board.Aquino celebrated SAISD’s college enrollment rate at the conference, with 52 percent of its class of 2022 currently in the first semester of college.
