It’s not edited and it’s not AI. This glowing red question mark was captured in the background of a new image from the James Webb Space Telescope. Here’s what astronomers know

Two of our galaxy’s most famous stars were recently photobombed by what appears to be a celestial question mark.Herbig-Haro 46/47

The two protostars are buried deep in the gas and dust that are being drawn in to add to their mass—look for them at the center of the red diffraction spikes. These stars are only a few thousand years old, and stars take millions of years to fully form. The telescope’s astonishing sensitivity allowed the glowing red question mark to be captured in the lower center of the image.

The hints pointing to two galaxies are found in the question mark’s strange shape. There are two brighter spots, one in the curve and the other in the dot, which could be the galactic nuclei, or the centers of the galaxies, Britt says. The curve of the question mark might be the “tails” being stripped off as the two galaxies spiral toward each other.

The sheer number of shining objects we find are bound to create some serendipitous images, and our brains have evolved to find those patterns, he says.captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2008 also look like a question mark, just turned 90 degrees. Please be respectful of copyright. A 'Question Mark' Formation Was Documented in SpaceA 'Question Mark' Formation Was Documented in SpaceScientists speculated it was one or more galaxies. The viral photograph was authentic, though it was a zoomed-in version of a larger image by NASA's Webb Space Telescope. The telescope's image was a composite of multiple exposures taken by its Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). Documenting a pair of forming stars (the bright, colorful objects in the image's center), the image was published on the telescope's official website on July 26, 2023.

JWST: Resolving the Hubble Tension with PrecisionJWST: Resolving the Hubble Tension with PrecisionA new survey conducted with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has provided more accurate measurements of Cepheid variables, narrowing down the error bars and creating a perfect distance ladder to Type 1a supernovae. This survey helps resolve the disagreement over the rate of the Universe's expansion, known as the Hubble Tension.
