In 2016 at age 12, she became the youngest girl to reach the highest point in the lower 48 states in America.
May is a big month for Naperville's Lucy Westlake. At age 18 years, 6 months, and 8 days, Westlake on Thursday, May 12, 2022, became the youngest American female to summit Mount Everest by about a month. Although she finished high school in December to pursue her adventuring, Westlake will return to her hometown in time to attend graduation ceremonies at Naperville North High School.
“I came into the climb well-acclimated as I had spent the past five weeks training with some of the best distance runners in the world in the highlands of Kenya at 7,000 feet,” Westlake said in a news release. “I am a distance runner as well, so my fitness level helped to endure the long, difficult days on the mountain. I also have a lot of experience climbing so the challenges of Everest felt familiar.
Amy Westlake said her daughter and Chhiring left camp 4 at 26,300 feet about 8:15 p.m. Nepal time and climbed through the night with the goal of reaching the top at sunrise. In 2016 at age 12, Westlake became the youngest girl to reach the highest point in the lower 48 states in America.Last year, Westlake set the world record as the youngest female to climb all 50 U.S. state high points when she submitted the 20,320-foot peak on Denali with her dad, Rodney, on Father’s Day.
