NJ Turnpike Authority commissioners voted to add 40 new maintenance and operations positions.
New Jersey Turnpike Authority commissioners added 40 new positions to the toll roads on Tuesday with most of them filling holes in the operations and maintenance divisions to respond to incidents on the state’s two biggest toll roads.to include the additional positions and to added increased investment revenues due to higher interest rates, which will more than cover the new hires. The Turnpike Authority also runs the Garden State Parkway.
It restores 32 maintenance positions lost between 2019 and 2021 through a 2020 reorganization, when the Maintenance Department was merged with the Operations Department, and 14 maintenance employees were transferred to engineering and 17 to State Police, according toThe added jobs will allow the authority to add more coverage at the Clark yard on the Parkway and provide for an overnight shift in the Turnpike’s southern maintenance division, said Tom Feeney, an authority spokesperson.
The Turnpike’s northern division has maintenance crews working overnight to do any maintenance work that requires a lane closure, but the Southern Division doesn’t, he said. Closing a lane during the day on the southern section of the Turnpike causes traffic to back up.The positions being added in maintenance are the ones necessary to staff a shift in a maintenance yard – roadway maintenance workers, crew supervisors, heavy equipment operators, automotive and trades personnel, he said.
