The Freehold Regional school district is dropping free busing for high school students who live closer than 2.5 miles to its high schools due to budget cuts.

Freehold Regional’s school board recently voted to eliminate courtesy busing in the 2023-2024 school budget in order to save $3.5 million, partially offsetting the impact of state aid cuts. The $214 million spending plan also includes 19 job cuts, officials said. Subscription busing, if approved by the school district, could start when classes resume following summer break, district spokesperson Rebecca Policastro told NJ Advance Media.
Other school districts offer subscription busing options for students who live within 2.5 miles of a high school or within 2 miles of an elementary school or middle school.
