Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst will have 'high' levels of noise through the end of September

Ground-shaking noise at the state’s largest military base is likely to result due to cratering munitions that include mortar fire, howitzer fire and other explosives, the base explained in its monthly training calendar. In addition, Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division Lakehurst is conducting nighttime aircraft acoustic tests. Testing will be held in the evening when winds are typically lighter, the base said.
Weapons training at the base can often be heard — and felt — for miles in Burlington, Camden, Ocean, Monmouth and Mercer counties. The base provides the alerts to residents in an attempt to lessen calls to local police departments. Weather conditions such as clouds can also affect where and how far from the base noise is audible. Low clouds can cause the noise to travel farther.
