An Essex County man used social media to recruit women and juveniles for sex trafficking and brought a girl to New Jersey as part of the scheme, authorities have alleged. Amin Sharif was ordered detained after an initial federal court appearance by video conference Wednesday, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said. The 47-year-old Newark resident faces charges of attempted sex trafficking an adult woman and one count of sex trafficking a minor.
Sharif allegedly used multiple social media services and profiles to target women and girls to engage in sex acts for money, according to prosecutors. He also allegedly used threats to coerce the victims to carry out the acts and advertised women and “at least one underage girl online for commercial sex acts.”
Authorities said Sharif brought at least one out-of-state juvenile to New Jersey and tried to bring a woman to the state via a commercial flight in the sex trafficking case.
