A grand jury indicted Jamil Hubbard in March 2019 before he was convicted of murder, bias intimidation, eluding, theft and a weapons offense.

The brutal attack of Jerry Wolkowitz by Jamil Hubbard on May 1, 2018, “was a targeted one, based on race, and such abhorrent behavior cannot be tolerated,” the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office said Wednesday.

Hubbard had slept in his car in the parking lot of Chesterfield Apartments on Harding Road after arguing with his former girlfriend, a resident of the apartment complex, officials said. When Hubbard awakened at about 7:15 a.m., he saw Wolkowitz walking nearby and “decided to try to kill him because he was white,” the prosecutor’s office said. Hubbard attacked Wolkowitz from behind, punching and kicking him before stealing his wallet and car keys, officials said. Hubbard then dragged the older man into the parking lot and ran him over.

Hubbard stole Wolkowitz’s car and led police police on a chase back toward Sayreville, refusing orders to pull over. Police eventually called off the pursuit due to the danger to the public but Hubbard was arrested at his apartment in Sayreville after abandoning the stolen vehicle. A longtime member of the Freehold First Aid and Emergency Squad and a freelance photographer, Wolkowitz was in a hospitalized in coma until heconvicted in November 2022 of murder, bias intimidation“There is no place in civilized society for those who commit such acts, and the only appropriate reckoning in cases such as these is their permanent removal from society,” Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond Santiago said in a statement.
