A Paterson Fire Department captain filed a lawsuit against the city last week, alleging was denied a promotion to battalion chief for pointing out alleged violations of policy and state law during the COVID-19 crisis. Capt. Steven Crampton says in court papers city officials violated the state’s Conscientious Employee Protection Act and his right to free speech when they promoted others over him during the pandemic.
Fire Chief Brian McDermott allegedly conspired with Mayor Andre Sayegh and others in political power to deny Crampton a promotion in retaliation for the captain complaining about the promotion process during the pandemic, according to the suit filed May 11 in Superior Court of Passaic County.
