An attorney from New Jersey has been charged in a 2020 COVID-19 relief and unemployment fraud scheme with payouts totaling nearly $350,000, U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger said. Morton Chirnomas, 60, of Clifton, is accused of fraudulently obtaining a $149,900 COVID-19 Economic Injury Disaster Loan and $195,000 in unemployment benefits under the names of other people between May and September of 2020, prosecutors said.
The defendant, an attorney who is administratively ineligible to practice law in New Jersey, was charged by criminal complaint with one count of wire fraud, officials said. If you purchase a product or register for an account through one of the links on our site, we may receive compensation.
