With Starship’s next launch delayed, the tech mogul has accused regulators of waging “lawfare” against his company as he pressures them to expedite approvals.
Elon Musk is accusing regulators of engaging in “lawfare.” The SpaceX CEO tweeted the term — and a threat to sue — Tuesday in response to the latest in a string of fines over the company’s alleged violations of environmental and other rules in launches from South Texas and Florida . It was just the commercial space company’s latest broadside against state and federal regulators.
fines Elon Musk’s SpaceX $633,000 for violations during two launches from Florida It’s a return to a well-worn page in Musk’s playbook of using public pressure on regulators to expedite approvals. Now, he’s trying to get federal OKs for vastly increasing Starship launches from South Texas and to return the mega-rocket’s booster to land at Starbase.
SpaceX fined $3,750 for breaking clean water laws in South Texas, but slowdown is bigger penalty In its statement, the company said, “At no time did SpaceX operate the deflector without a permit,” saying it was “operating in good faith” under supervision of the TCEQ with a Stormwater Multi-Sector General Permit. That permit, however, doesn’t apply to the deluge system — and regulators have said they notified the company of the need for permitting ahead of the system’s use.
Boca Chica booms: A chronology of SpaceX explosions in — and over — South Texas The FAA is considering SpaceX’s request to launch its Starship and Super Heavy booster as many as 25 times a year from Starbase. The Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that operating the deluge system at such a pace would discharge more than 2.1 million gallons of water and 1,900 pounds of metals over a half mile outside SpaceX’s launch site.
