Music has always been an important part of Jonah Barrow's life, so therapists at TIRR Memorial Hermann recognized he was an ideal candidate for music therapy.
and the ability to walk, and that it can increase motivation for patients during rehab.
Music helped him accomplish his phase one goals. Walcott played guitar and gave Barrow a drum to play as he sat up in bed. And it was easier to use his right arm while he was doing something enjoyable like playing a ukulele. He returned to TIRR after Thanksgiving for another three-weekadmission. His team noticed the difference soon after he arrived.
“He was very motivated in sessions without Ty and working hard. But he could walk faster and further, or stand longer, in sessions where we had music therapy,” Birdsong said. “And it wasn't necessarily a conscious thing.” By the time he was discharged just before Christmas, Barrow was able to use a manual wheelchair and walk well enough to navigate at home with a walker. He’s due to begin outpatient rehab later this month. It’s difficult to say how much function he’ll regain, but the hope is that he’ll continue to improve, Birdsong said.
