Dominique Morisseau's new play contemplates the force of family and generational conflict as it explores two parallel narratives
. Her work is innovative and sharply written, often offering searing commentary on challenges facing Black America and beyond. And she is excitingly prolific: the past decade has featured a new Morisseau premiere every few years , giving us a chance to experience the growth and evolution of her style.in Union with one of Morisseau’s latest plays, “Mud Row.
While Frances and Elsie come to us in periodic flashbacks, the play’s primary narrative focusses on the question of what’s to be done with what we eventually learn is Elsie’s house in the present day. Elsie’s granddaughter Regine inherited the house, and has come with her husband Davin for the first time in years to evaluate its state after receiving an offer from a developer.
The play joins Morisseau’s latest work, “Confederates,” which premiered in April at New York’s Signature Theater, as evidence of the playwright’s continuing interest in the lasting effects of history on the present. “Confederates” similarly pairs a historical narrative with one set in the present day, examining how the passage of time and supposed development of history falls short of redressing historical wrongs.
In its current form, “Mud Row” is overly long and drafty, more full of compelling ideas than sharply crafted drama. But Marshall Jones, III’s production at Premiere Stages nonetheless locates and accentuates the play’s foundation in sisterly conflict.
Like all of Morisseau’s work, “Mud Row” challenges audiences to consider the conflict before our eyes within much broader historical and social context.
