Beth and Brad Thorp, whose son Mitchell died at 18 from a mysterious debilitating illness, share their family's faith journey in 'ANEW Creation: Finding Meaning in the Midst of Tragedy.'

A Carlsbad mother and father whose baseball-loving teenage son fought a mysterious debilitating illness for five years and died at age 18, tell their story in a book, “ANEW Creation: Finding Meaning in the Midst of Tragedy.”

Mitchell started to experience myoclonic seizures and again he underwent hospital tests. The neurologists, psychiatrists, hospital physicians, as well as others who were brought into the case, had no answers. Mitchell lost 35 pounds and was unable to feed himself or walk. Since then, the foundation has helped 1,500 families, including sibling support, giving $2.3 million throughout the San Diego area. The foundation’s programs include Medical and Home Assistance, Healing and Rehabilitation, and Wheelchair Conversion Vans along with a Youth Leadership Council for youths to support the foundation’s mission while being trained in Servant Leadership skills.

That walkathon grew into the annual Warrior Spirit 5K run/walk in memory of Mitchell and now draws thousands of participants raising money for families like the Thorps. Another miracle, Beth Thorp said. “It took me and my family 13 years to finally write our story. Early on I could not see all what God was doing,” Thorp said. “But as the foundation grew, I knew this must have a higher purpose than I can see. God knows how to take a tragedy and turn it for good,” Thorp said.
