MPS officials want to make sure residents understand the impact that a property tax up for renewal will have on both MPS and Pike Road Schools.MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Montgomery Public Schools officials want to make sure that Montgomery County residents understand the impact that a property tax up for renewal will have on both MPS and Pike Road Schools.

“We’re talking about a renewal of taxes that we’ve already been collecting for about 40 years, so there will be no increase to anyone’s taxes,” said MPS Superintendent Melvin Brown. The ad valorem tax provides about $11 million annually to MPS and a little over $1 million to Pike Road Schools. If it isn’t passed, it could lead to serious cuts.

“It would be devastating where the district would have to make some very, very, very hard decisions,” said MPS Chief Financial Officer Arthur Watts. Watts says the tax would become even more important next year when MPS’ overall $350 million budget will be reduced because of a drop in federal funding, including “COVID federal relief funds that is going away at the end of this year.”Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
