The City of Montgomery hosted the 'This Side of the Bridge Celebration' on Saturday.
Montgomery community unites to remember Civil Rights foot soldiers with ‘This Side of the Bridge Celebration’Published: Mar. 24, 2024 at 10:50 AM CDTMONTGOMERY, Ala. - It was an evening of family and fellowship along the riverfront, and a chance to remember the Selma to Montgomery marchers who made it to the Alabama State Capitol 59 years ago.
“This celebration means a lot to the city of Montgomery,” said event coordinator Isis Hunley. “Sometimes in history we might forget those who had their boots on the ground to make freedom.” It was all a part of the “This Side of the Bridge Celebration,” where Grammy Award-winning gospel artist Le’Andria Johnson performed. Attendees also listened to speeches honoring the foot soldiers.
Organizers say that the event is so needed because there are many events in Selma honoring the marchers, and they felt the Capital City needed more representation. “It came into play because when we look at the Selma to Montgomery march, all of the celebrations that go on usually take place in Selma, so we wanted to do something to commemorate the foot soldiers from Montgomery,” event coordinator Kenya Taylor explained.“If we can look at the soldiers from 59 years ago and say ‘hey, they went out and they fought and made a difference,’ we can play our part in doing the same thing as well,” she expressed.
