St. Peter Catholic Church on Adams Ave. turned 190 this week.
The church was originally built and dedicated on April 25, 1834MONTGOMERY, Ala. -If you could travel back in time to 1834, you probably wouldn’t recognize much of Downtown Montgomery, which wasn’t the State Capitol until over a decade later.
You may recognize Saint Peter Catholic Church. Clergy, partitioners, and visitors walk around the church while singing songs of worship to commemorate 190 years of rich history. “We’re the hub of Catholicism here in the River Region. Most of the churches started from this parish,” said St. Peter Catholic Parish Council President John Johnston.
The church was originally built and dedicated on April 25, 1834, but a rising Catholic population caused the church to be rebuilt in 1852, which cost $7,000 and was paid for in gold. That would end up being the building you see today on Adams Avenue.“The facade pipes are actually from the original organ from the late 1800s.
