Updated: May. 18, 2024, 3:50 p.m.The Cleveland Monsters took on the Syracuse Crunch in Game 2, and held on for another victory.CLEVELAND, Ohio — Arguably the worst mistake in hockey is for the goalie to leave their post, giving the other team an open lane for a shot. To Cleveland’s benefit, this mistake was made by Syracuse late in the last period, in which Alex Whelan sped down for the open shot and scored.
It was through efficient shot selection and aggressive defense that helped the Monsters hold off the Crunch in a 4-1 win on Saturday. The Monsters’ defense tied into the offensive game plan, which featured an emphasis on better and tighter shot selection. In fact, it was the Monsters who hit double-digit shots first halfway through the second period.It still took a little while for both sides to get a feel and clean up any mistakes. An example was when Monsters goalie Jet Greaves moved a little forward to grab the puck, only for his pass to a teammate to be intercepted by Syracuse and almost become a goal.
A few minutes later, the Monsters answered back but in weirder fashion than usual. Multiple players from both sides were bunched up near the goal when Billy Sweezey scored. It took almost 10 minutes for the officials to check for any penalty, but afterward, none was suspected.The third and final period was still a tight one as the Monsters held a one point lead. But after Whelan’s goal, which closed any chance for Syracuse to make a comeback, that was game.
