al Highway Administrator Shailen Bhatt on Monday said the plan is to break ground on the project later next year and return for a ribbon cutting in 2030. The nation's top federal highway official joined Alabama's governor and other elected leaders in Mobile to highlight the recent $550 million award from the Bridge Investment Program for the $3 billion project."We got the ball rolling now. We're not going to stop. We're going to get it done," said Governor Kay Ivey.
"At the start of the next year, we'll probably have a better handle on that loan amount to be able to really count on what we're going to be able to get from TIFIA," said Perry. Leaders acknowledged not only how badly the grant funding is needed for the project to move forward but also the impact a new bridge will have on the region.
