The Mobile City Council will vote on a $4.9 million contract with Adelete Ports to install a new gangway at the Mobile Alabama Cruise Terminal. The same company installed the terminal’s first gangway more than a dozen years ago for about $2.6 million.
And to continue supporting the competitive cruising industry, the city is going to have to open the taxpayers’ wallet once again. On the docket are plans to buy a $4.9 million gangway connecting the terminal to cruise ships.
Snowden said the project will not be completed by the time Miami-based Carnival Cruise Line brings the Carnival Spirit vessel to Mobile in October. But he said the old gangway can be used while the new one is assembled, adding that he is “not worried about not having an operational gangway” next year.
In Norfolk, Virginia, where Carnival has reportedly only 11 sailings that are seasonal from October to May, “There were questions that came up about it,” said Councilman Ben Reynolds, referring to when council members first learned of the city’s interest in purchasing the new gangway. “It was about making an investment when not having a cruise ship that will be there all the time. But it really boils down to whether we want to be in the cruise business or not.”
Approximately 35,000 room nights per year is attributed to the industry, and downtown hotels says that lack of a ship removes much-needed business from the city.
