Settled in the heart of Missouri City and across the street from the Freedom Tree on Kitty Hollow Lane, a park is under construction that pays homage to the legacy the historic live oak represents.

On what used to be a 640-acre Palmer Plantation during the American Civil War, the Freedom Tree is the site where enslaved people working on the plantation learned they were free, once word of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached Texas.

"The park is going to have an education piece about the Freedom Tree and the contributions that African Americans have played in our community," said Jason Mangum, Missouri City's Director of Parks and Recreation. The nearly five-acre park is going to include a playground area, a sculpture that will be commissioned by the city, a pergola, a multi-use trail, a labyrinth, interpretive signage and distinctive landscaping.
