The latest Mission: Impossible adventure sees Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt and his IMF team going up against arguably the series’ most terrifying villain yet: a self-aware AI that can worm its way into any system, and uses complex algorithms to predict its adversaries’ every move.
Those who saw Mission: Impossible 7 know Briggs is persistent, and also know that Whigham’s character makes it to the end of the movie, and will be back for Mission: Impossible 8. What they may not be so clear on is why Briggs seems so extra-motivated to keep up with the globetrotting Hunt, even though his quarry keeps just slipping away.
"I told them that there has to be a reason why I'm chasing [Ethan]. Otherwise, it's not going to play for two and a half hours, to have egg on my face in every country, that I just miss him. So I just wanted to ratchet that up without explaining anything. I didn't want to explain it, other than going into, possibly, the next one. But also, man, I wanted to honor the 'Midnight Run' of it all, 'The Fugitive' of it all.
How Does Briggs Figure Into Mission: Impossible 8 The climax of Dead Reckoning – Part One set up the mission for Part Two, which involves a sunken Russian submarine, and a mysterious key that might unlock the secrets of the terrifying AI dubbed “The Entity.” Ethan Hunt will of course accept the challenge of getting down to the sunken sub, and it’s a safe bet his old IMF friends Benji and Luther will be there with him.
Confirmed also to be returning for Mission: Impossible 8 are the characters of Briggs and Degas, whose assignment to bring back Ethan Hunt isn’t over quite yet. How the CIA duo and their boss Kittridge fit into the picture is yet to be revealed, but Whigham teases the possibility that like Gabriel, Briggs has a history with Ethan Hunt.
