Canadian ultrarunner Dave Proctor came up with this idea when his run across Canada—Proctor was going for the fastest known time, coast-to-coast—was canceled due to the coronavirus. Disappointed like many other runners whosehave been postponed or canceled, he decided to not let his training go to waste, and instead decided to host a virtual backyard ultra. The race grew larger than he ever imagined.
“COVID-19 restricted us from travel and public gatherings yet we found away within two weeks to create the second largest ultra race in history with the strongest elite field ever assembled,” Proctor, the owner of multiple Canadian running world records, toldHumans ability to adapt to adversity is awe inspiring. ... The ultra running community is a close knit group that is looking for a light shining through the cracks.
A quick explainer on the format for the backyard ultra—or the last-person-standing race: Runners have to complete a 4.166667-mile loop every hour. Runners are disqualified if they are not on the starting line at the beginning of the hour, or if they are unable to complete the loop in an hour. For the Quarantine Backyard Ultra, runners have to complete the mileage required each hour, starting on the hour. Runners will be mostly held to the honor system when it comes to completing their loops. They can run outside or indoors on a treadmill, for countries under lockdown.
Runners will use Zoom to keep in touch with race organizers and stream their runs. Because Zoom limits meetings to 24 hours and 1,000 people, there will be multiple calls going, and they will be restarted every 24 hours. Each loop must also be uploaded on Strava.
